A grade point average converts letter grades into numbers, weights each by the credit hours of its course, and averages the result. The calculator handles the standard 4.0 scale and the 4.5 scale used by some schools, and lets you weight honours or AP courses if your school does.
How GPA is calculated
GPA = Σ (grade points × credit hours) ÷ Σ credit hours. On the 4.0 scale, A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0. A weighted GPA adds 0.5 (honours) or 1.0 (AP/IB) to the grade points of designated courses, which is how weighted averages above 4.0 arise. Credit hours matter: an A in a four-credit course moves the average more than an A in a one-credit elective.
When to use this calculator
Use it to check a transcript, to work out what grades you need this term to reach a target cumulative GPA, or to translate between weighted and unweighted figures when a scholarship or programme specifies one. Enter your existing cumulative GPA and total credits alongside the current term to see the combined result. Grading scales vary between institutions — some award no A+ and some treat a B+ as 3.5 — so use your own school's table if it differs from the default.
Worked example
Five courses: an A in a 4-credit maths course (16 points), a B+ in a 3-credit history course (9.9), an A− in a 3-credit science course (11.1), a B in a 3-credit English course (9.0), and an A in a 1-credit lab (4.0). Total points 50.0 over 14 credits gives a GPA of 3.57. If the maths course is AP and weighted +1.0, its points rise to 20, and the weighted GPA becomes 3.86.
